The City of Des Moines is planning for Middle Housing, and we would like your input! We recently launched our “Middle Housing Regulations Update” project. This project will modify regulations to comply with several bills recently passed by the Washington State Legislature. The review and adoption of the development regulations will conclude by June 30, 2025.
What is Middle Housing and Why is it Important?
Middle housing (HB 1110) is defined as buildings compatible in scale, form, and character with single-family houses and containing two or more dwelling units. Middle housing types include duplexes, triplexes, townhouses, cottage housing, and more. The purpose of middle housing is to create more housing options for Washington State by increasing middle housing in areas traditionally dedicated to single-family detached housing. What about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)?
In 2023, lawmakers also passed EHB 1337, which aims to ease barriers to the construction and use of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). An ADU is a dwelling unit on the same lot as a single-family home, duplex, triplex, townhome, or other housing unit.
What are the Next Steps?
We need your help! The City of Des Moines would like to hear your comments, questions, and concerns about middle housing. The City will host a public open house to discuss the implementation of middle housing and ADU regulations with the community. The public open house will take place on January 15th from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Des Moines Activity Center, 2045 216th Street, Des Moines, WA 98198.
Please feel free to contact [email protected] with any questions.
