Finance Department

The Finance Department provides comprehensive, transparent services that protect the financial health of the City of Des Moines. The Finance Department works to ensure that the City runs smoothly and operates responsibly. The Department is responsible for the overall financial operations of the City; including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, vendor payment, payroll, revenue and tax collection, and cash management.

As of 2024, the City has switched to a biennial budget cycle beginning with the 2025-2026 Biennial Budget. Annual Financial Statements, reported on a cash accounting basis, are audited by the Washington State Auditor’s office annually. Other duties of the department include providing revenue and expenditure forecasts and financial oversight and assistance in grant administration.
