The City of Des Moines is pleased to announce the selection of Ted Boe to lead the police department as the City’s new Chief of Police.
Ted Boe has served as Burien’s Chief of Police since 2018. Prior to Burien, he served 18 years in the King County Sheriff’s Office, as Sergeant, Precinct Operations Captain, and Major Investigations Section Captain in Seattle, Burien, and SeaTac.
Following the recent departure of Chief Tim Gately, City administration conducted a thorough review of potential options to fill the vacant position, through either interim assignments or a permanent replacement. “Chief Boe’s name continued to come up in our review process as a person of high moral character, the exact kind of expertise and experience that we needed and someone who may potentially be available to make a move,” Interim City Manager Tim George stated.
“The City is gaining a leader known for his ability to prioritize community engagement, implement effective policing policies and promote accountability,” George added. “I couldn’t be more excited for Chief Boe to get to work in Des Moines and for the residents of this City to meet him.”
Chief Boe, already an established regional partner with DMPD, possesses an intimate understanding of our community, and the need for effective law enforcement strategies that meet the needs of South King County residents. His selection will inject a fresh perspective and innovative leadership into our highly motivated and committed department.

The offer that has been made is conditional upon a successful and thorough background review. It is anticipated Chief Boe will officially start in his new position mid-August of 2024. Acting Chief Mark Couey will continue to lead the department until Chief Boe begins.
