Animal Control

Found a Pet?

If you found a lost animal, do not call 911.

Due to budget constraints, the City of Des Moines provides limited animal control services for dangerous animals and does not provide lost pet services.

Please use this guide to find assistance in reuniting the pet with its owner or locating appropriate shelter services.

Immediate Steps:
Injured Animal? Contact a 24-hour animal hospital.
Animal Bit Someone? Call 911 for a police response.
Just Lost or Found?
Police and Animal Control will not respond to routine lost/found pets.
If safe, keep the animal in a secure area away from traffic.
Check for ID tags and attempt to contact the owner.
Scan for a microchip – available for free at DMPD, local vets, or shelters.
