Michael Matthias was appointed City Manager of Des Moines in August 2016, after serving as the City’s Assistant City Manager since 2014.
He was honored to be selected as a Robert F. Kennedy Fellow for his work in low income communities in Oakland, California in the late 1970's. He holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Development from the University of Oxford, England, a Master of Science in Applied Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Master of International Relations from the University of Cambridge, England, and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
He has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors with a focus on financial management and economic development.
Michael is the recipient of the 2019 Washington City Management Association Award for Excellence.
